MONTHLY LEARNING THEMES

The themes are monthly while holidays and special events are added as well.
Most importantly, the interests of the children will determine theme activities used to teach the content.
Content standards (Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills -TEKS) are derived from the Texas Education Agency and used to create interdisciplinary lessons encompassing all subjects.

Theme Possibilities

Sample Theme Lesson: Animals

Each child chooses his/her favorite animal. -> Read books to learn all about the animal. -> Learn how to draw the animal and/or create scientific diagrams. -> Focus on specific characteristics such as habitat, camouflage, diet, life cycle, etc. to study more thoroughly. -> Demonstrate a characteristic using art (build a habitat with playdough/cardboard or use paint for patterns that animals use to camouflage). -> Compare/contrast the chosen animal to other animals. -> Use the animals in basic Math through the use of drawings/figures. -> Use maps to locate and learn habitats/topography. -> Write/tell stories about the animal. ->Use unstructured time to continue learning about the animal.

Children continue to develop their own ideas to learn more about their chosen animal with gentle guidance from the teacher being sure to encompass the TEKS. Two year old children and ten year old children can do all of this on his/her own level. They are able to learn alongside each other which is very beneficial.
